Pleasanton lies on about 21 sq. miles of land area in the spacious flatlands in the Amador Valley, just thirty minutes southeast of Oakland and the San Francisco bay area, precisely 37.67 degrees north of the equator and 121.88 degrees west and 335 feet above sea level. Pleasanton's population in 1970 was 22,000 and  was about 67,724 in  2002.

Pleasanton is an incredibly charming and nostalgic California community, however growth has occurred in the area. The Tri-Valley Transportation Guide: A new tool to fight congestion and improve air quality in our valley. The Tri-Valley Resource Team on Air Quality is a local group of representatives from the public and private sectors working together to improve air quality in the region. Collectively, the group, under the auspices of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), assists with the implementation of the Spare the Air program, provides resources to assist in air quality improvement efforts and acts as an information development and deployment source on matters relating to air quality.

Ranchers and thoroughbred horse breeders were attracted by the fine climate and were followed by dairy farms, hop ranches and vineyards. It was after World War II that the advantages of life in a rural community close by a metropolitan area attracted subdividers and a steady flow of new residential homeowners. Main Street was first paved in 1924, but that could have been just yesterday since the streets in Pleasanton have been well maintained to this day.
